Cherokee County Park Board Continuing To Discuss New Park Development near Leesburg

ParkBoard3The Cherokee County Parks & Recreation Board is continuing to discuss the possibility of partnering with Alabama Power Shoreline Management in developing a new county park on County Road 20 in Slackland near the dike.

During their meeting on Wednesday the board voted to request that Alabama Power put their plans on paper so that the Park Board will have in detailed writing exactly what all is going to be involved as the process unfolds, at this time Alabama Power has agreed to fully fund the cost of all materials and the county has agreed to provide equipment and man-power.

Once the park is completed it would the responsibility of the Park Board to fund the upkeep of the property.

An update was also given on the progress of some new additions at Cherokee Rock Village, Park Manager Shannon Mackey said that the new playground equipment has been installed and that work is being done in  order to re-stain the cabin.

Also, the emergency landing zone has been completed for use of air-medical transport helicopters in and out of the park with the only exception being the signs marking the zone which will be installed this week.

Board Chariman Leann Hill gave a brief update on the upcoming Ascend Weekend at Cherokee Rock Village on April, 23rd there is already a large line-up of vendors on tap for that day in addition the Rainbow City Fire Department will be doing a rope rescue demonstration.

In other business, the board approved a contract agreement with Weiss Internet Services for wireless high speed internet services at Cherokee Rock Village.
