It was a short meeting of the Cherokee County Commission on Monday afternoon.

The commission approved a professional services agreement with Constantine Engineering to perform H&H studies, which are designed to determine upstream or downstream effects on the drainage culverts located on County Road 8 and County Road 126.

It was also revealed during the meeting that the county will be opening an animal shelter in the near future.

County Administrator Tim Burgess and Animal Control Officer Dustin Dutton informed the Commission that Etowah County can no longer take animals from Cherokee County, as they have been doing for many years – and thus far, efforts put forth by the commission to locate another shelter for the animals have been fruitless.

Burgess then asked the commission for approval to work with the county attorney to lease or purchase a building from Dr. Roger Nichols located at the intersection of Highway 9 and County road 71 in Centre. 

The building is already up to code and should pass approval by the state for a shelter.

In the interim, until a shelter can be staffed and opened, the county will be contracting with local veterinary services to house animals; Burgess added that in no way will the facility be in competition with any other animal services in the county.
