Elderly Woman Dies in Gadsden House Fire Friday

Friday Fire 3A 92 year old woman was fatally injured in a Friday afternoon house fire in Gadsden.

Etowah County Coroner Michael Head, says Willie Belle Kirkland died from the combination of smoke inhalation and burns sustained during the fire; meanwhile her son James Kirkland was air-lifted from the scene to UAB Hospital for treatment of severe burns.

Firefighters were actually on their way to that home, at 1003 Wainwright Street in East Gadsden, prior to an emergency call being made, due to the fact that the home sits directly across the street from a fire station and smoke was clearly visible from the home.

The fire was logged as occurring just prior to 3:30 that afternoon; it took only about five minutes to bring the blaze under control, unfortunately it was too late to save the victim.

Early indications point to the kitchen as the starting point for the blaze, however the investigation into the matter continues.
