SHANNON FAGAN: Northeast Regional Tournament Set For This Week

The end of the high school basketball season is fast approaching. After sub-regional action concludes on Monday and Tuesday, regional tournaments will begin around the state.

Dothan hosts the South Regional. Alabama State University is the site for the Central Regional. Wallace State Community College in Hanceville hosts the Northwest Regional. Our area teams will be heading to Jacksonville State University’s newly renovated Pete Mathews Coliseum for the Northeast Regional.

Admission to each regional is $8 per day.

The Northeast Regional in Jacksonville begins Thursday with eight games on the slate. Class 7A girls begin the action at 9 a.m. Play continues through the day with 7A boys (10:30 a.m.; 1:30 p.m.), 7A girls (noon), 1A girls (3 p.m.; 6 p.m.) and 1A boys (4:30 p.m.; 7:30 p.m.).

Classes 5A and 2A take center stage on Friday. Class 5A girls and boys semifinal times are 9 a.m., 10:30 a.m., noon and 1:30 p.m. Class 2A girls and boys times are scheduled for 3 p.m., 4:30 p.m., 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

Classes 3A and 4A will battle it out on Saturday. Class 3A games are 9 a.m., 10:30 a.m., noon and 1:30 p.m. Class 4A games are set for 3 p.m., 4:30 p.m., 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

The action takes a break on Sunday, but gets cranked back up on Monday with Class 6A semifinal action (9 a.m., 10:30 a.m., noon, 1:30 p.m.). Class 1A girls and boys finals are scheduled for 3 p.m. and 4:45 p.m.

Class 5A and 2A finals will be played next Tuesday, beginning with the 5A games at 12:30 p.m. and 2:15 p.m. The 2A finals are scheduled for 4 p.m. and 5:45 p.m.

Northeast Regional action concludes next Wednesday with Classes 3A (9 a.m.; 10:45 a.m.), 4A (12:30 p.m.; 2:15 p.m.) and 6A (4 p.m.; 5:45 p.m.).

All regional final winners advance to the Final 48 at Legacy Arena at the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex Feb. 29 through March 5.

The Cherokee County Country Club will kick off their 2016 golf tournament schedule with a two-person par-3 tournament starting at 10 a.m. on Feb. 20. No hole will play more than 180 yards and seniors (65-plus) will play from forward tees. The cost for members is $15. Non-members will pay $35.

After play is completed, players will be divided into A and B golfers based on scores they shot. Teams will be paired at that point by blind draw and final scores totaled.

A hot dog lunch will be served following the event.
