An Etowah County grandmother who had been charged with capital murder for reportedly forcing her 9 year old granddaughter to run until she collapsed and eventually died – is now reportedly brain dead following a massive heart attack.
Joyce Hardin Garrard had been serving a life sentence, without parole, for forcing Savannah Hardin to run non-stop for more than three hours.
After collapsing, the child was taken to the hospital, dying three days later.
According to testimony the punishment was for lying about eating a candy bar on the bus.
Garrard was convicted in March of 2015.
According to reports Garrard is brain dead and currently on a ventilator at Jackson Hospital in Montgomery.
Savannah’s mother, Jessica Hardin, faces a charge of murder however no trial date has been set.
