Bond Denied for Accused Killer / UPDATED

Abernathy Murder

Murder suspect Donnie Lee Abernathy appeared before District Judge Wes Mobley Tuesday for a bond hearing. Abernathy stands charged with capital murder, attempted murder and kidnapping in addition to criminal mischief in connection with a triple homicide which took place shortly after midnight Sunday.

Judge Mobley issued a No Bond Order on the capital murder charge, and bonds of $250,000 each on the attempted murder and kidnapping charges.

Abernathy will be housed in the Cherokee County Detention Center until he goes to trial.

Cherokee County authorities responded to a 9-1-1 call, at around 12:30 Monday morning in an isolated area of the Round Mountain community on County Road 664.

Abernathy managed to elude officers for a short distance, before crashing his Ford Mustang in Sand Rock. A female who was abducted at the residence, 25 year old Jerrica Hamilton, of Cedar Bluff was in the vehicle when the accident occurred; she was taken to a local hospital where she was treated and released. Abernathy was treated at the same facility prior to his being taken to jail.

According to Coroner Jeremy Deaton three woman were fatally injured in the shooting – 71 year old Sylvia Sue Duffe (pronounced Duffy), Clara Lee Edwards, age 68 and Pamela Collette O’Shel, age 49 – all of Centre.

Another shooting victim, identified as John McClung of a Round Mountain address, survived his wounds after being air-lifted to UAB for treatment. According to family members he is currently home, and continues to recover.

The investigation into the matter is being headed up by the Major Crimes Unit.
