Local Authors Tommy Moon and Randall McCord were the special guest speakers at Tuesday’s meeting of the Historical & Preservation Society of Cherokee County.

The pair discussed their new book “The Cotton Picking Centre Warriors”.

Former Cherokee County Coach Randall McCord shared that the journey began in late May of 2010 with his job being writing and Tommy researching.

Together, their findings immediately confirmed what they already knew – football and farming was and is forever intertwined at Cherokee County High School.

For forty-six years parents either withheld their children from classes or voted to dismiss school during crop gathering time.

This calculates to fifty-one percent of the school’s seasons. Therefore, if football is the spirit of CCHS, then cotton is the soul; hence, the title “The Cotton-Picking Centre Warriors,” was born.

Behind every game, coach and player lies a personal story.

Moon and McCord have conducted interviews with many players and coaches, searched the archives of many local newspapers, read personal reminiscences, scanned available school year-books, read numerous sports histories and perused Cherokee County Board of Education records. To be credible, historical writing must be documented.

Those interested in purchasing the book may contact Tommy Moon by calling 256-927-3577.
