Rome Police confirm that one person in is custody, following a shooting incident on Hillside Avenue in the Garden Lakes area Thursday.

A call came in after 5:00pm reporting several shots being fired on Hillside Avenue, which is the road behind Garden Lakes Baptist Church.

According to Major Mark Wallace with the Floyd County PD, two subjects left the scene; one in a vehicle, the other on foot. One of them was believed to be the resident.

As of late Thursday, it appeared as though no one was actually hit by gunfire.

Neighbors said the person who actually lives in the duplex came home and when he tried to go inside, someone from inside fired the shots.

It is not known why the man was in the apartment.

According to Major Wallace, officers received information indicating that the suspect who did the shooting was in an apartment at nearby Fountain Square. Because he was believed to be armed, SWAT was called in and nearby apartments were evacuated.

As SWAT was preparing to make contact with the man, he came out and surrendered.
