The Etowah County Republican Party Executive Committee Tuesday nominated lawyer Jody Willoughby for the county’s vacant district attorney position.

The nomination will be forwarded to Gov. Robert Bentley for consideration.

Etowah County District Attorney Jimmie Harp died last week at the age of 49. Harp had served two terms as district attorney after his election to the post in 2004.

State Sen. Phil Williams (R-Rainbow City) nominated Willoughby, an Etowah County native and 1999 graduate of Southside High School.

Willoughby attended law school at Faulkner University-Jones School of Law in Montgomery and has been in private law practice in Gadsden since. He is married and a father of one.

“I truly appreciate this high honor,” Willoughby said. “I have always had a passion for service and this appointment, if confirmed by Gov. Bentley, will allow me to serve my community in a much bigger way.”
