Verna Margaret (Lanier) Hughes

Verna Margaret (Lanier) Hughes, age 95, of Wildwood Cove, Cedar Bluff, Alabama, passed away Saturday morning, June 13, 2015 in a local hospital.

Mrs. Hughes was born August 1, 1919 in Morrow Georgia.  She was the daughter  of the late Bessie Simpson and Herman Simpson. She was a talented seamstress specializing in drapery design. Mrs. Hughes lived the majority of her life in Rome and was a long time member of Fellowship Baptist Church.

In addition to her mother and father, she was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years and father of her children, Harvey Clarence Lanier, Sr.  Several years after his death, she married her elementary sweetheart, Roy Lee Hughes, who also preceded her in death. She is also preceded in death by her son Harvey “Buddy” Clarence Lanier, Jr. and her sister, Sarah Simpson.

Survivors include her daughters, Margie Souder of Wildwood Cove, Cedar Bluff, Alabama and Cheryl Hobbs of Temple; sister, Susan Simpson of  Ellenwood; three grandchildren, Martin Souder and wife, Jackie, of Wildwood Cove, Elisa Waits and husband, Todd of Wildwood Cove, and Kim Fisher of Kingston; nine great grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services for Mrs. Hughes will be held on Friday, June 19, 2015 in the chapel of Good Shepherd Funeral Home with the Rev. Kirby Rowland officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:00 PM until the funeral hour.  Interment will follow at East View Cemetery

The following gentlemen will serve as pallbearers. Bobby Davis, Nathan Fisher, Kristian Fisher, Bill McLemore, Luke Richardson, Brent Tucker and Steven Souder.
