Mohawk Industries said Tuesday the company is closing its Chatsworth BCF yarn plant in August and moving all of that plant’s 156 workers to other facilities in northwest Georgia.

“Mohawk has consistently re-invested in the business to improve quality, productivity and safety,” said Joey Faircloth, Mohawk’s senior vice president of manufacturing and operations in a press release. “In order to fully realize the value of those investments in yarn manufacturing, we are transitioning production to locations where the facilities have been significantly upgraded.”

Company officials said Calhoun-based Mohawk has made a number of investments recently in fiber and yarn manufacturing to support increased demand for carpet and rugs made from the its SmartStrand triexta and Continuum polyester fibers. Officials said the 156 employees of the Chatsworth BCF plant will be moved to some of these more modern plants.

“This operational restructuring will yield improved productivity and allow us to meet expanding yarn demand with greater efficiency,” said Faircloth. “Additionally, the talent and experience of the men and women from our Chatsworth BCF plant will make our yarn operations at other locations even more successful.”

Jerry Hendrix, Mohawk’s vice president of human resources, said employees could be moved to facilities other than yarn plants if they want to pursue other opportunities within the company.

“As Mohawk continues to grow, many excellent job opportunities are available within our Murray, Whitfield and Gordon county facilities,” said Hendrix. “We look forward to working with the individuals at the Chatsworth BCF plant to identify the best options for them. They’ve done great work in Chatsworth, and they’ll make important contributions to Mohawk’s success at any of our local facilities.”
