Baisha Woody and Fabiola Frias Luna of Anniston recently attended the Governor’s Proclamation Signing ceremony for Administrative Professionals Week.

This event recognizes administrative professionals across the world for their hard work and dedication and was organized by members of the International Association of Administrative Professionals Alabama-Mississippi Division. Woody is the Office Careers instructor with the Gadsden State Community College Skills Training Division and Luna is a student in the program.

The two were joined by administrative assistants, executive assistants, instructors, and students from across the state at the ceremony held in Montgomery.

The Skills Training Division offers four training program areas within Office Careers including: General Office, Legal Office, Accounting, and Medical Office. Skills Training has collaborated with the Health Sciences Division at Gadsden State to enhance the Medical Office skill set by providing training on how to take vital signs such as blood pressure, pulse and respirations, temperature, height and weight. “Incorporating these skills into the program will allow students an opportunity to become more marketable in the medical/health care field,” Woody stated. Woody and the first group of students to successfully complete the vital signs training include: Rosetta Brown of Anniston, Lisa Gibbs of Collinsville, Lauren Leath and Tawanna Taylor of Gadsden, and Brenda Ruedas Ortiz of Oxford.

In addition to Office Careers, Skills Training provides instruction in Auto Body, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration, Machine Trades, Welding, and the Ready-to-Work program, which assists individuals with the skills necessary for employment that will meet most business and industry requirements in Alabama. Tim Green, dean of technical education and workforce development stated, “The Ready-to-Work program is continuing to grow and now has four classes currently offered in two counties–Calhoun and Etowah.

The Skills Training Division at Gadsden State provides short-term, non-credit, competency-based training for individuals who would like to upgrade existing skills or learn new skills.
