It was a very productive meeting for the Centre City Council on Tuesday – the Council approved a Resolution with the East Alabama Regional Commission for the city to officially become part of the Cooperative Purchasing Program.

Council Members approved the purchase of a new phone system for city hall; this will be the exact same system that was recently installed at the new police department headquarters – the cost of the equipment came in at $5,975 from Surveillance Concepts out of Cedar Bluff.

The Council also approved the purchase of two Chevy Tahoe’s to be added to the fleet of the Centre Police Department at a cost of $72,257.78 which include lights and other necessary equipment, the price does not include cameras and radars for the vehicles which will have to additionally be added.

Centre Police Chief Kirk Blankenship said that these vehicles will replace two vehicles that have exceedingly surpassed their lifespan and have cost the city hundreds of dollars in repairs – Chief Blankenship stated that he had several items to be sold at auction that would help cover the cost.

The council also granted permission for the Cherokee County Humane Society to use the Centre Fire Station for the site of their annual low cost pet and wellness clinic coming up later in the month, Mayor Tony Wilkie said that the organization did have insurance and had been doing the clinic for the last several years.

At the request of the Parks & Recreation Committee – the council has approved two requests for tournaments to be held at the Centre City Softball Complex, the first will be the Northeast Alabama Softball Camp June 25-28 for age 5-12 sponsored by Cherokee County High School.

The 2nd was a request from Billy Garrett to host a softball tournament on June 11 with all proceeds going to the Cherokee County High Softball Booster Club.
