Spring Like Fishing On Weiss Lake

Fishing on Weiss Lake Saturday and Sunday resembled “Fishing Days Gone By”, like the late 80’s and early 90’s when most crappie anglers caught a “Limit” stringer of “Weiss Lake Slabs” on any given spring day. The mild temperatures ranging upward to near 70 each day brought out the fishermen in big numbers. Saturday boats stretched from the point off Money’s Bend Road in Cedar Bluff down the Coosa River to the sharp bend in the river at Blackwell’s Crossroads. Those anglers were trolling deep for crappies and they were very successful with many limit stringers being caught. For local businessmen in the area, it was a welcomed sight. For the local fishermen, it means the crappie population is much better than recent years. The size of the fish and the numbers are quite impressive this year. On Sunday, March 8, one local guide had a limit stringer of 60 “Weiss Lake Slabs” by 8:30. They were fishing the Coosa River ledges with minnows. It did not matter whether anglers were tight lining minnows deep or trolling deep they were catching fish.

Bass anglers had a good weekend as well. They were fishing jigs and crankbaits deep off the points along the Coosa River and secondary creek channels with success. Several limit stringers were brought in with a 5 pound largemouth topping the scales.

The Spring Fishing Season on Weiss Lake could very well be the best in more than 15 years. Anglers are anticipating a great season and the out of state anglers are coming back in great numbers. Many local motels were booked up over the weekend and most restaurants were extremely busy.

The water level is about normal for this time of year at 3 feet below the full mark. The water temp is from 48 to 51 depending on which area of the lake you are on.

Crappie Anglers should take note the minimum size limit on Crappies is 10 inches. No size limit on Bass.
