An officer involved shooting in Anniston has left a 60 year old man hospitalized. According to information contained in a news release from Captain Allen George with the Anniston PD – officers responded to a disturbance call in the 1400 block of Morrisville Road, just before 8:30 Monday night.

Police arrived on the scene to find James Wine standing in the driveway of the home, with a knife in his hand; following repeated commands to drop the weapon, the man refused to do and was tased – however he apparently removed the barbs from the taser, and managed to hold on to the knife.

The report indicates that he then raised the knife and began moving toward the officers – at which point, an officer fired one round in defense of himself and others on the scene. Wine was struck in the abdomen – and after falling down he stabbed himself in the chest with the knife. As he moved to stab himself a second time, police used a taser on him causing him to drop the weapon. He was tased yet again while trying to reach for the knife, and was finally subdued, with medical personnel being called for assistance.

Wine was transported to the Emergency Room at Regional Medical Center where he under-went surgery.

That case is currently being investigated by the Anniston Police Department Investigations Division, Anniston Police Department Crime Lab & the Jacksonville State University Center for Applied Science.
