Dr. Martha Lavender Named New President Of Gadsden State Community College

Gadsden State Community College has its fourth president in just over a year’s time.

The website al.com reports that Martha Lavender has been named interim president at the school, a little more than two months after Helen McAlpine.
Chancellor Mark Heinrich announced that McAlpine will be returning to her previous post as president of Drake State Community and Technical College, effective Sept. 22.

Lavender began her nursing career as a graduate of Gadsden State Community College. She later received a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Jacksonville State University, and her master’s and doctoral degrees in nursing from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. In 2011, she retired as the Dean of Health Sciences at Gadsden State Community College.

Last year, Lavender was inducted into the Alabama Nursing Hall of Fame.

McAlpine replaced interim president William Blow, who was named to the post after former President Ray Staats resigned following a faculty no-confidence vote.
