Man Shoots and Kills Himself Following Standoff with Law Enforcement

Bresley 1According to Calhoun County Sheriff Larry Amerson a man suspected of robbing a home on Wednesday morning shot himself following a stand-off with law enforcement officials later in the day.

Officers followed 40 year old Michael Bresley into a wooded area off U.S. 78 that morning – as a precautionary measure, nearby Coldwater Elementary was placed on lockdown during the ensuing stand-off.

Amerson said Bresley shot himself at around 2:00pm and he was taken to Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead by Coroner Pat Brown.

Reportedly, Bresley, along with a woman, was found by a homeowner who had returned to her residence in Alexandria to find the suspect with a gun taken from the home.

Bresley allegedly pointed the gun at the woman, and took her cell phone prior to fleeing the scene; the getaway vehicle was spotted by a deputy near the Oxford Winn Dixie.

After pulling around to the back of the store, Bresley bailed out and ran into the woods; the yet-to-be named woman was captured at the scene.

After being seen by law enforcement – Bresley reportedly placed the gun to his head and he began threatening to kill himself – a short time later he pulled the trigger.

An investigation into the matter is on-going; authorities say the woman taken into custody will likely be charged with burglary.
