You can find a lot of things at Brooklyn’s iconic Coney Island. There’s the Nathan’s hot dog stand, the sand, the ocean, the rides, the carnival games. And on Aug. 19, you’ll find a pretty good group of All-Stars, too.
Rays top prospect Casey Gillaspie and Mets No. 7 prospect Amed Rosario will highlight the New York-Penn League North and South All-Star Teams at Brooklyn’s MCU Park, the Class A Short Season circuit has announced.
Gillaspie was taken 20th overall by Tampa Bay out of Wichita State, where he had a .389/.520/.682 slash line with 15 homers and 50 RBIs in 59 games as a junior this spring. He signed quickly, receiving a $2,035,500 signing bonus, and was with Hudson Valley by June 14.
The switch-hitting first baseman has a .277/.362/.457 line with six homers and 33 RBIs so far in his first season as a pro. The No. 25 overall prospect in the Draft, the 21-year-old slugger — who is the younger brother of White Sox third baseman Conor — shot to the top of the Rays farm system rankings when MLB.com updated them two weeks ago.
Rosario, now in his second pro season, sits at No. 7 in the Mets system thanks to his speedy, defense-first profile. The 18-year-old shortstop received above-average grades on his arm and run tools, but his bat in Brooklyn has proven plenty worthy of All-Star recognition. His five triples are tied for the most in the NYPL, and his .722 OPS is third among the circuit’s qualified shortstops.
The Dominican Republic native will be joined on the South Team roster by his fellow countryman and Cyclones teammate Marcos Molina. The 19-year-old right-hander, who checks in at No. 16 on the Mets’ list of prospects, leads the league with a 1.27 ERA and 0.85 WHIP across eight starts (49 2/3 innings). He’s also struck out 50, walked 11 and held opponents to a .173 average in that span.
Red Sox 2014 sixth-rounder Danny Mars should give Molina and other South hurlers a run for their money. The Lowell outfielder leads all active NYPL batters in average (.363), OBP (.419) and OPS (.915) and should set the table for the North offense.
The most notable absence from the NYPL showcase is Cardinals prospect Rowan Wick, who was promoted from State College to Class A Peoria back in July. The 21-year-old right fielder still leads the league in all three slash-line categories (.378/.475/.815), home runs (14) and RBIs (38) despite having not played for the Spikes since July 21.
