Elderly Woman Found Wandering Near Railroad Tracks Dies

The elderly woman found injured in Rome earlier in the week has died.

According to information from the Floyd County Coroner’s Office – Cheryl Harris, age 69 – was pronounced dead at Floyd Medical Center at 7:41 Thursday morning – with the official cause of death being listed as blunt force trauma to the head.

Harris had been found wandering along the railroad tracks near Cedar Avenue and 12th Street at around 9:30 Monday night.

She was found by a Floyd County Sheriff’s Office Deputy, and at that time, had suffered a large laceration to the back of her head.

She had no identification on her, but a missing persons report came in from the Rosemont Drive area about an hour later, which led to the discovery of her name.

Harris was taken from the scene to Floyd Medical Center for treatment where she remained until her death Thursday morning.

An investigation into her death is on-going.
