Section Mayor Ron Fossett was found guilty of DUI on Monday.
Fossett had been arrested in June of last year (2013) near his home – after an off-duty Scottsboro Police Officer called 9-1-1 to report that a car was being driven erratically. According to WAFF TV48, trial testimony revealed that Fossett was going to fire Section Police Officer Barry Munza that night; Munza said he worked for a short time following the arrest.
Officer Munza testified that the mayor admitted to having two wine coolers, and he discovered a mixed drink in the console of the car.
As he was about to place the mayor under arrest, Munza said Fossett told him he was fired – jail officials testified that the mayor repeated the statement that he intended to fire Munza.
Sharon Patterson, whose 13 year old daughter was in a truck that was allegedly almost struck by Fossett’s car when he ran a stop sign, expressed her concern:
Audio PlayerFossett was sentenced to 90 days in jail but the judge suspended the sentence. He was ordered to pay $600 in fines and $550 in court costs – Fossett’s attorney said they do plan to appeal.
