Local businessman, Jerry Culberson, was on hand at Tuesday night’s meeting of the Centre City Council to propose a park to be located along the Alabama Highway 9 causeway at the state docks. Culberson is hoping to convince area city and county leaders to work together to establish the fifth county park at the location, which he said would greatly improve the local economy. According to Culberson, due to a lack of facilities, Weiss Lake and Cherokee County continue to lose business in favor of other lakes across the state and region, adding that Weiss Lake can no longer claim the title of “Crappie Capital of the Word.”
Culberson asked the council to write letters not only to the Cherokee County Commission to adopt the causeway as the fifth county park, but also to Alabama Power to conduct dredging and continue to support decreasing the winter drawdown from 6 feet to 3 feet. The more than enthusiastic council, agreed to begin drafting the letters.
With one of the city’s lawnmowers in the shop, Mayor Tony Wilkie informed the council that the cost to repair the Massey Ferguson would total more than $6,000. After discussing several bids for a new mower, the council decided to purchase a 26-horepower Kubota diesel 60” zero-turn mower for $11,500. The Massey Ferguson was declared surplus to be sold at a later date.
Following a recent inquiry, the council discussed setting a rate for a business license for a tattoo parlor. It was mentioned that in 2006 the council had discussed setting the rate at $1,005, but no action was ever taken. After checking rates from other cities, the council hopes to establish a rate at the next council meeting, which is scheduled for be Tuesday, June 10 th, at 5pm.
