The Alabama Fraternal Order of Police recently held a memorial service on the south-lawn of the Capitol to honor four law enforcement officers killed in Alabama in 2013. Among those officers were Deputy Allen Kay with the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office and Investigator Jeff Bryant of the Centre Police Department.

Governor Robert Bentley, who spoke at the memorial, said (quote) “the sacrifices that are made by these men and women are unmatched. It is important for all of us Alabamians and Americans to always take note of this.” (end-quote)

During that ceremony, Vickie Kay, the wife of Deputy Kay – and DeKalb County Chief Deputy Michael Edmondson – placed red flowers on an arrangement representing a badge in honor of Deputy Kay. Cherokee County Sheriff Jeff Shaver and a Fraternal Order of Police honor guard member followed with flowers in honor of Investigator Bryant. ‘Amazing Grace’ was played on the bag-pipes and a twenty-one gun salute was also given during the service.

District Attorney Mike O’Dell, along with members from his staff – were in attendance to honor these fallen officers.

O’Dell remarked (quote) “These four officers paid the ultimate sacrifice in carrying out their duties as law enforcement officers.” (end-quote)
