Expenses for this year’s Liberty Day festivities were approved by the Cedar Bluff Town Council on Tuesday night, coming in at a total of $19,332. With donations down this year and currently totaling approximately $2,500, the council agreed to subsidize the difference with monies from the Parks and Recreation budget.
Additionally, council members agreed that if there is no significant increase in this year’s revenue from the event, the 2014 Liberty Day would likely be the last.
After receiving feedback from local business owners, the council voted to lower the retail liquor for off-premises consumption tax from 10% to 2%.
The council accepted Town Clerk Kelley Burnett’s letter of resignation.
Mike Bolyard, owner of Am-Tran, asked the council for a letter, which would state that the ambulance service would be able to respond to calls on the Emergency 911 frequency. However, Cherokee EMS Board Member Danny Smith stated that as the frequency is owned by Cherokee Medical Center, the council would not have the authority to provide such a letter. After hearing from both sides concerning conflicting reports on Cherokee EMS’s response times and Am-Trans insistence of the value of a having ambulance stationed in Cedar Bluff, no action was taken.
The next regular Cedar Bluff Town Council Meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, June 9th, at 5:30 pm.
