Sunday Alcohol Sales In Gadsden Up For Vote In The Senate

Phil Williams Pic

Senator Phil Williams says that Legislation requiring the Gadsden City Council to put the issue of Sunday alcohol sales on the city ballot in August is expected to come up for a vote in the Senate on Tuesday or Thursday.

Williams said he had signed the bill out of committee earlier in the week but because of filibustering by Democrats on other legislation, it was unable to come to the floor for a vote.

He said he expects the bill to pass.

There are about 60 local bills to be considered by the Senate. Williams said he doesn’t know how many bills are ahead of the Gadsden legislation to be considered.

The legislation, sponsored by Rep. Craig Ford of Gadsden, has passed the House with Ford, Rep. Becky Nordgren, of Gadsden, and Rep. Mack Butler, of Rainbow City, voting for it.

Williams said he will support the bill.

A local bill usually passes when all members of a delegation support it.
