Tuesday night’s meeting of the Centre City Council saw a full agenda that was passed in relatively short time. Two appointments were made, including that of Candi Garmany, who was appointed to fill a vacancy left by Councilman Phillip Roberts on the CED Mental Health Board.
Also, Billy Wayne McKinney was appointed to fill a vacancy on the Water Works and Sewer Board, a position formerly held by the late Charles Laney. Council members Phillip Roberts, Derrick Wheeler, and Marc Johnson opposed the appointment, each citing the need to place a city council member on the board, as was previously discussed, according to Wheeler. Mayor Tony Wilkie stated that this move would have required a change to the city’s articles of incorporation.
At the recommendation of Thomas Loader, Chairman of the Alcohol Review Committee, the council approved a license for the sale retail beer (off premises) and retail table wine (off premises) at Simon, LLC, DBA Centre Chevron at 902 West Main Street.
A contract with RDS for the collection of alcohol sales was also approved.
The city’s insurance policy with AMIC was renewed with an annual premium for the 3 year policy standing at $102, 388.
Also approved was the purchase of a surplus service truck from DC Gas. The 2007 Chevrolet truck, which was appraised for $9,995, will cost the city only $2,498.75.
In a 4-3 vote, the council approved the acquisition of a drug dog at the request of Centre Police Chief, Kirk Blankenship. While the dog will be given to the department at no cost to the city, the cost of training and equipment will total $6,586.34. Council members Harry Moon, Wheeler, and Johnson opposed the measure.
Several improvements for the city’s Dixie Youth fields were approved with the first of these items being new scoring booths, which will total $1,164.33 from local company, Danny’s Builders Supply. The council also approved moving forward on the addition of lights and dugouts to one of the Dixie Youth fields, costing an estimated $13,500.
American Legion State Vice Commander, David Hartline, was on hand to request that the city host an Arm Forces Day parade on Saturday, May 17th, to honor both veterans and active duty servicemen and women. The council, which enthusiastically welcomed the idea, will take the matter under consideration.
The next regular Centre City Council meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, March 25th, at 5:00 p.m.
