Man Shot and Killed by Chattooga County Deputy / UPDATE

Sheriff Mark Schrader has released the name of the man that was shot and killed by a Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office Deputy on Sunday (March 9th).

According to information contained in the news release, 60 year old Herbert Wayne Morehead of Lyerly was shot and fatally wounded, after he had fired a high-powered rifle at Deputy Robert C. Clark.

Clark had gone to the home in reference to a domestic dispute – and when he arrived, the suspect reportedly came from around the corner of the house and fired in the direction of the deputy.

After the deputy identified himself, Morehead allegedly took aim to shoot again and at that point Clark fired a single shot from his service revolver, killing the man.

Sheriff Schrader says Deputy Clark has been placed on administrative leave – which is standard procedure in such cases.

The incident is currently being investigated by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
