A landmark in Mentone was destroyed by fire over the weekend.

The historic Mentone Springs Hotel went up in flames Saturday night, after an electrical panel on the second floor exploded.

General Manager Judy Rathel told al.com, that she and two hotel guests were in the lobby on the first floor around 7:00pm when they heard a popping noise and saw smoke coming from upstairs – a call was quickly placed to 9-1-1 however by the time help arrived, the fire had already spread next door to the White Elephant Antique Mall.

Both structures burned to the ground with both Mentone and Ft Payne firefighters staying on the scene until the early morning hours of Sunday.

There were a total of eight guests staying at the hotel when that fire broke-out, and fortunately all managed to exit the building safely.

The Mentone Springs Hotel was one of the oldest in the state, and was featured in the New York Times bestseller “1,000 Places to See Before You Die”.
