Mr. Robert ‘Bob’ Bishop

Mr. Robert “Bob” Bishop, age 76 of Centre, passed away Saturday, January 25th in Centre.

Funeral services will be 3 PM Monday, January 27th, at Centre First Baptist Church, with Rev. Melvyn Salter, Rev. Tommy Smith and Rev. Eddie Nation officiating. Burial will follow in Cherokee Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends from 12 until 2:30 PM Monday at Centre First Baptist Church.

Pallbearers include Billy Joe Baker, John Coggin, Jeff Grimes, Danny Powell, Bud Ringer, Claude Robertson, Jerry Scruggs, Al Shumaker, Charles Singleton, Jamie Tallent. Honorary pallbearers include members of Carpenters for Christ, Mr. Bishop’s Sunday school class (Fellowship Class), and his Piggly Wiggly Breakfast Club.

Survivors include wife, Mary George Bishop; son, Tracy (Suzanne) Bishop of Centre; grandchildren, Matt (Caitlin) Bishop, Zach Bishop, Joel Bishop, and special granddaughter Kellie Bates; nieces, Jana (Danny) Chesnut and Shara (Lee) Gladden; great-nieces, Claire and Julia Chesnut and Grayson Gladden; sister-in-law Shelia Mobley.

Mr. Bishop was a native of Cherokee County, the son of the late Robert Lester and Annie Mae Hart Bishop. He was an active member of Centre First Baptist Church, and coordinator of Cherokee County’s Carpenters for Christ, which, under his leadership, expanded into an organization with volunteers from across the country. Mr. Bishop was a general contractor in Centre, responsible for the construction of over 300 churches in the country; he was also owner of Adsing Manufacturing. In his earlier years he was an engineer for the State Highway Department and was an avid world traveler in his role as engineer for Boise Cascade Corporation and later as owner of Kingsbury Homes. Locally, he was a member of the Rotary Club and Sam Dixon Masonic Lodge. Mr. Bishop was a graduate of Jacksonville State University’s civil engineering program, completing some coursework at Auburn University.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Carpenters for Christ.
