Due to the unusually low temperatures over the past few weeks demand has increased for propane heating.

There are currently no shortages for residential homes, however due to the high volume required for poultry farmers, supplies may have been limited.

Gas comes into Alabama via pipeline with two stations where semi-trucks can load.

The loading process can only move so fast.

There has also been an increase in out-of-state trucks coming here to load, therefore the wait time has increased.

This has led to rationing by some companies.

Bottom line, this is a logistics issue.

No doubt, poultry growers are acutely aware of their gas inventory and how long it will last.

They should be in contact with their gas supplier and integrator.

Farmers concerned about their supply should contact the Alabama Propane Gas Association at (334) 358-9590.

Meanwhile, Attorney General Luther Strange reminds Alabamians that the state’s price gouging law now is in effect for purposes of propane gas sales and delivery.

The Governor has declared an official State of Emergency throughout Alabama due to severe dangerous weather and potential propane gas shortages.

Although what constitutes an unconscionable price is not specifically set forth in state law, it can be a price that is 25 percent or more above the average price charged in the same area within the last 30 days–unless the increase can be attributed to a reasonable cost.
