“Heightened Security Measures” at Fyffe School Following Facebook Post

Fyffe School 3

There was an increased security presence at Fyffe School on Thursday in the wake of a Facebook post that suggested a Columbine-style attack could be initiated at the campus.

According to the Ft Payne Times-Journal, Principal Ricky Bryant said there was outside concern over the Facebook comment, which sparked a social network frenzy, and DeKalb County Sheriff Jimmy Harris sent several school resource officers to Fyffe as a precautionary measure.

Bryant stated that a school resource officer looked into that message as soon as it was discovered and concluded that the message wasn’t a threat per se – but rather a “suggestion” that something similar to the 1999 massacre at Columbine High School in Colorado might occur.

Bryant added that the person who posted that comment was a former Fyffe student that no longer lives in Alabama.

It’s unknown just what prompted the individual to post the comment – however – Bryant’s office was crowded Monday with students who complained about the daily inspirational message given at the school several days earlier, regarding homosexuality.  Bryant said the Student Government Association Advisor typically screens the student-selected message – but was out that day.

The investigation into the matter is on-going.
