Veteran’s Day will be especially meaningful to one Cherokee County resident this year; that, as a result of an unexpected message from overseas which brought a flood of memories regarding her father, William L. Abney.

Cedar Bluff resident Chris Abney Dendy recently paid a visit to the WEIS Radio studios to share her remarkable story concerning the return of some of her father’s military gear from World War II

Receiving something unexpectedly that had been lost for almost 70 years was needless to say – a shock; Dendy told us that since the family received the helmet they’ve been flooded with e-mails  calls and Facebook messages from across the country filled with fond recollections of William L. Abney, during war and peacetime.

During the morning show interview WEIS Radio’s Jerry Baker asked about Abney’s tour of duty and what memories he brought back to share with his family members and friends, in those years following his return home

Dendy said her father attended law school on the G.I. Bill after coming home and after he passed the bar exam, he served in the Georgia House of Representatives; she said he was well known for being the first person to “campaign by plane”; his brother, who was a pilot, handled the controls, while he leaned out of the cockpit, and using a megaphone, shouted “Vote for Abney!”.  He later served as a Walker County, Georgia District Attorney and as a Probate Judge before retiring.
