Cherokee County, Sand Rock, Spring Garden and Cedar Bluff Girls headed to Super Regional

1A, Area 13 Tournament Wrap-up

In volleyball yesterday, Class 1A, No. 4 Spring Garden (32-15) claimed the Area 13 Championship with a 25-12, 25-19, 25-19 sweep over Cedar Bluff.   The Lady Panthers advanced to the title game after a claiming semi-final victory over Collinsville (8-13) 25-13, 25-18 and 25-12.  The Garden girls are coached by Mr. Ben Carroll. 

Cedar Bluff (16-28) earned their shot at the area title by defeating Gaylesville (23-17) 25-17, 25-20, and 25-22.  The Lady Tigers are under the direction of Ms. Tiffany Ferguson.

Both Spring Garden and Cedar Bluff advance to Friday’s North Super Regional in Huntsville.

The fourth-ranked Lady Panthers play Area 10 runner up Brilliant (19-10) at the Von Braun Center at 11:30 a.m.  Cedar Bluff plays Area 10 champion and sixth-ranked Lynn (20-8) on Friday at 9 a.m.

2A, Area 13 Volleyball Tournament Wrap-up

Class 2A, No. 5 Sand Rock (42-10) defeated Westbrook Christian 25-17, 25-8 and 25-13 in their 2A, Area 13 semi-final match to advance to title game against third-ranked West End of Walnut Grove.   West End had defeated Sand Rock twice earlier this season.  This time the Lady Cats clawed their way to victory and secured the area title in three straight games 25-23, 25-23, and 25-21.   Sand Rock’s Madison Smith was named tournament MVP.  Smith was joined on the all-tournament team by Macy Haney, Meredith Trail and Ashley Norris.

Smith had 23 kills, 21 digs, five blocks and three aces.  Haney delivered 17 kills, Trail offered up 21 digs, while Norris contributed 56 assists, 15 digs and three aces. 

Also coming up big for the Lady Cats were Courtney Rowe, Shelley Sonaty and Maggie Lynn Lumsden.  Rowe had 13 kills, 27 digs and six aces.  Sonaty added four kills, three blocks, 18 digs and four aces, while Lumsden tallied six kills and three blocks.

Sand Rock is coached by Ms. Lisa Bates.

Sand Rock and West End also advance to the North Super Regional Tournament at Huntsville’s Von Braun Center on Friday.   The Lady Wildcats will open against 2A, Area 10 runner-up Vincent at 5:30 p.m.  West End faces Area 10 champion Altamont at 3 p.m. 

4A, Area 11 Volleyball Tournament Wrap-up

Cherokee County (21-14) stretched their 4A, Area 11 semi-final volleyball match to the limits before shutting the door on Alexandria.   The Lady Warriors lost the first game to the Lady Cubs 25-16 then rallied to take the next two games 25-18 and 25-21.  Alexandria responded with a 25-23 win in the fourth game to knot the match at 2-2.  In the tie-breaker the Lady Warriors punched their title game ticket with a 16-14 victory.

In the championship match, Cherokee County wasn’t as fortunate against second ranked Jacksonville (32-13).  The Lady Eagles swept the Lady Warriors 25-17, 25-15, and 25-15 to claim the 4A, Area 11 title. 

Both teams advance to the North Super Regional Tournament at Huntsville’s Von Braun Center.   The Lady Warriors open on Friday at 4:15 p.m. against 4A, Area 16 champion Wilson (36-8) while Jacksonville draws runner-up Central Florence (18-22).
