Officials With Cherokee Electric Co-Op Urge Public To Beware Of Scam

Officials with Cherokee Electric Co-op are cautioning the public about a possible scam, with callers using their name to rip off their customers.

Sarah Bright with Cherokee Electric Co-op says they have received calls from customers saying that someone is calling and pretending to be with the co-op.

The callers tell the customer that their bill is delinquent and they need to pick up a cash card from CVS, Walgreens or other retailer and then call them back with the card number.

She says the co-op does make courtesy calls to remind them to pay their overdue bill before they disconnect the power.

However, they would never tell people how to pay their bill and it is not them making these calls.

If you receive such a call, do not fall for it.

You can notify Cherokee Electric Co-op or contact local law enforcement to report the scam.
