Local Firefighters Train With Simulator

Fire trucks and visible smoke in the parking lot of the Centre Wal Mart Friday and Saturday may have caused some to take a second look, but there was no cause for alarm.

Local firefighters, with the use of the Alabama Fire College’s mobile trainer, were getting some valuable training in a safe, controlled environment.

There are only two mobile training simulators in the state and Centre has been on the list for about a year to bring it here.

According to Centre Fire Chief Kevin Ware, it teaches basic interior fire attack.

Firefighters could also practice hose advancements and breathing with SCVC’s.

Propane and smoke machines are used to simulate conditions a firefighter may experience in a real-life situation, including temperatures anywhere from 400 to 800 degrees.

However, it’s much safer.

If there is an equipment or safety issue that arises, the fire can but shut off immediately.

Ware says the simulator provides good training for rookies but also serves as good refresher for more experienced firefighters.

In addition to Centre, firefighters from Cedar Bluff, Gaylesville, Sand Rock, Leesburg, Tucker’s Chapel, Crossville and Dogtown recieved training over the two days.

From Centre, the mobile trainer will head to Scottsboro.
