Shopping Online Can Be a Taxing Experience For Some

Georgia residents are witnessing something new on Amazon.com today – they’re seeing sales tax tacked onto their purchase.

As on September 1st Amazon began remitting 4% sales tax on Georgians; that, based upon a law passed last year, which compels internet retailers to pay the levy.

That new law is expected to add some $18 million to the state’s coffers.

Similar legislation, known as the Marketplace Fairness Act, is slowly making its way through the U.S. Congress; meanwhile Georgia joins eleven other states in levying that internet tax; the other  states include –Arizona, California, Kansas, Kentucky, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia and Washington.

Reportedly four other states are looking at adopting the law in the near future.
