Train Hits Car on Thursday Morning

Collinsville Train Wreck - 08-29-2013A Collinsville woman was shaken up – but amazingly, was unhurt – after her car was struck by a train just before noon Thursday (August 29th)

According to the Ft Payne Times Journal – 26 year old Tomas Ralios Petrona was headed toward Cherokee County in a Mitsubishi Gallant when the crossing arms at the intersection of Highways 11 and 68 came down while she was crossing the tracks.

Collinsville Police Chief Gary Bowen stated the preliminary report said she saw the train coming and panicked; when she was unable to get the car off the tracks, she bailed out and ran to safety.

Brown said that the Norfolk Southern train struck the vehicle, and carried it some 50 yards down the tracks before coming to a stop.

Fortunately, no one was hurt during the incident.

Chief Brown said he received assistance from both the DeKalb County and the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office along with Alabama State Troopers.

Traffic was blocked at the intersection for approximately three hours following the crash.
