Attempted Hold Up Foiled By Combative Clerk

A convenience store clerk in Rome fought back against two men who were attempting to rob him shortly after midnight Sunday.

According to Rome City Police Lt. Willingham, two black males – armed with a gun, entered the small shop around 1:00am and demanded money; when the clerk refused one of the men sprayed him in the face with pepper-spray.  The clerk still refused to hand over the money and was pistol-whipped by the two men before they fled the store empty-handed.

The clerk is reportedly okay.

Rome City Police are investigating that crime as a case of Aggravated Assault – and have pulled surveillance footage from the store, which is located at 1300 Shorter Avenue.
