The U.S. Fish and Wildlife is calling for special protection for a plant found in only select places in the world, including Cherokee County.
According to documents published on the Federal Register, both Cherokee and Floyd County, GA require a ‘critical habitat’ for the threatened Whorled Sunflower.
The federal agency is specifically calling for a 1,542 acre plot for the endangered plant to be shared between the four U.S. counties it inhabits.
The document indicates the critical habitat in Cherokee County is located near Mud Creek near the intersection of County Roads 164 and 29.
Though private landowners would be free from the restrictions this designation would bring, it could hamper where and what the federal government does.
Comments on the Whorled Sunflower’s proposed habitat change will be accepted through October 1st.
