A Day For Bain

On Saturday the community came out to show their support for a little boy who has been through so much the last seven months.

Bain Hammett (pictured above with his mother, Rebecca; his father, Jon and his sister, Ava) was a very active, happy and healthy 4-year old little boy until December 2, 2012, when he was found unresponsive and having seizures. A CAT scan at Floyd Medical Center in Rome revealed several areas swelling on his brain.

Bain was airlifted to Egleston Children’s Hospital in Atlanta where he spent three weeks in ICU, most of that in a medically induced coma to keep his brain from seizing.

After that he spent weeks doing rehab therapy at Scottish Rite Hospital and additional weeks rehabbing at home. Doctors and the family are still unsure as to the reason for the seizures.

On Saturday, a number of fundraisers were held to help the family with medical expenses, including the Bain Hammett Benefit Bass Tournament, a benefit barbeque next to the Centre Fire Station and “Bain Bash” at the Gadsden State Cherokee Arena, which featured inflatbles for the kids, face painting, t-shirt and snack shops, food, a silent auction and more.

Rebecca Hammett, Bain’s mother, yold WEIS Radio News was overwhelmed by the show of support from the community.

She added Bain has been doing a little better. Although he is still having seizures, he is walking good and there are indications that his speech may be coming back.

She says they are going to try some new treatments too.

Also Saturday at the Gadsden State Arena, the weigh-in for the bass tournament was held.

3rd Place went to Kelvin and Kevin Bagley, who caught 17.31 pounds of bass.

Jason Henson and Tyler Smart caught 18.58 pounds, which was good enough for 2nd.

And in First Place, Bubba Teague and Harry Richardson caught 19.21 pounds of fish.
