sla2

The third annual Etowah County Sheriff’s Office Student Leadership Academy began on Sunday.

Two incoming high school seniors were nominated by their principals to participate in the one week event. Each participant has previously met academy requirements and was evaluated, by Etowah County Sheriff’s Office staff, based on demonstrated leadership, physical fitness, grade point average and community service.

Students will experience each part of the Sheriff’s Office daily and special operations as well as, an overview of the American criminal justice system.

Participants also will be challenged with guest speakers in various professional disciplines in setting high personal goals for their life, school, career, and community leadership.

The week will be highlighted by a remembrance service at the Etowah County Law Enforcement Memorial and graduation ceremony at the Gadsden Museum of Art.

Jacksonville State University is partnering with the Etowah County Sheriff’s Office to award three college credit hours to those students who successfully complete the SLA.
