Apparently, scamming has become the most popular occupation in the world – as it seems more people are working in that field than ever before.

Most of the scams are simply variations on a theme – and that’s the case when it comes to what a Summerville, Georgia couple was presented with a few days ago.

They received a telegram telling them they’d won $2.5 million and that was followed by a phone call from a man telling them to go to CVS – and activate a CVS “Green Dot Card” in the amount of $350.00.

He then claimed that once the transaction was complete, the $2.5 million would be delivered by a police escort (how thoughtful of them!).

Fortunately, the couple had a combined IQ higher than their shoe size – and immediately notified the Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office of the attempted scam.

Unfortunately cons of this nature DO sometimes work with people sending money in the hope of a big cash payoff or expensive prizes – which of course, never arrive.

Remember the vast majority of these scams are from people outside the country – which makes it almost impossible to catch and prosecute them – much less get your money back.

Never, ever give out any private personal information such as your social security number, credit card number, bank account number or anything of that nature, over the phone, because once they have that information scammers can clean out your bank account and/or run up huge amounts of debt in your name.

And remember, if you didn’t enter a sweepstakes – you didn’t win.

The best defense against being scammed is being AWARE.

And sometimes, it just makes you feel good to hang up on someone.
