Personnel action took up the majority of Tuesday night’s Cherokee County Board of Education meeting.

The board, at the recommendation of Superintendent Mitchell Guice, voted to post the job of Band Director at Cherokee County High School as a 10-month position instead of 9-months.

Guice says the school will soon have its 6th band director in 7 years and extending the length of the contract will help lure more candidates who will want to stay longer.

He adds stability is vital if the program is going to grow.

Guice also announced that applications for employment with the school system will soon be accepted on-line via the Alabama Department of Education website.

Effective June the 1st, applicants can go to www.alsde.edu/TeachInAlabama to access applications.

Guice says many school systems in the state have moved away from paper and pen applications and have gone to this system.

The advantages include uniformity and having a permanent digital record of the application in case the paper copy is lost.

The Superintendent did not hand out personnel action sheets during Tuesday night’s meeting as usual.

He says there have been some terminations and he wants to have time to notify those employees before they hear it on the news.

He says the personnel action will be made public later this week.

In other action Tuesday, the board approved out of state travel for Nikki Gossett, Tracy Johnson and the Cedar Bluff Varsity Cheerleaders.

The group will attend Cheer Camp in Panama City from July 29th through August 2nd at no cost to the board.

The school board also approved a compensatory contract with Kim Hulsey for Speech Services during the summer.

The next board meeting will be May 28th at 6 p.m. at the Central Office.
