Cherokee County Firefighter Training Exercise

Blaze 9As part of the on-going training for Cherokee County firefighters, Centre Fire Chief Kevin Ware conducted a training exercise Thursday night – which included the burning of four structures just off of First Avenue in Centre.

Blaze 7A group of 18 – made up of firefighters from the Centre, Spring Creek, Sand Rock, Mt. Weisner, Tucker’s Chapel, McCord’s and Broomtown departments – took part in that training exercise.

Blaze 3Those abandoned homes were chosen through the City of Centre’s “Lein & Clean” Ordinance, as part of the effort to rid the city of structures which may be an eyesore to the community, and also are potentially a source of health problems.

Blaze 5The issue has been discussed frequently during recent city council meetings – with the houses off of First Street being chosen as the starting point for the cleanup operation.

Mayor Tony Wilkie said the “Lein & Clean” initiative would continue, and that plans are already in place to move forward.

The Thursday night training exercise is just one example of the dedication to fire safety exhibited by the City of Centre and Cherokee County, in the effort to provide the community with the most effective fire protection possible; continuous training also helps to protect the lives of firefighters as they take their lives into their hands, to assist the public.
