Last week a clear majority of Gadsden State Community College employees gave college president Raymond Staats a vote of “No confidence” in regard to his leadership abilities.

On Tuesday, Dr. Staats released a statement responding to that vote.

It says:

“I’m continuing to communicate directly with members of our College faculty and staff to gain a shared understanding of the issues and concerns that ultimately led to last week’s vote.

I’ve also been engaged in daily discussions with the Chancellor and his staff. I have a deep affection and respect for our entire College team of professionals, who are all dedicated to advancing the successes of Gadsden State.

I’m anxious to continue working with our full team in reaching consensus resolutions to the various issues, and will be giving this my full attention over the coming weeks.

I’m confident this moment for the College will pass, even as we keep well-focused on educating our students and preparing each of them for a successful future.”

According to the news website al.com, employees at Gadsden State’s main campus, the Cherokee County campus in Centre and the Ayers campus in Calhoun County, took part in that vote, which was conducted by representatives of the Alabama Education Association.

Employees were given a simple ballot with two questions – YES meaning the employee did have confidence in the leadership of the college – NO meaning no confidence.

Of the 350 total votes cast, 312 employees – that’s 89% – voted No confidence.

34 voted yes and 4 voted undecided.

Staats has been the school’s president since June of 2011.
