The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office saw the need for a better way to recognize law enforcement officers, their families and other community members.  In January of 2007 that need was filled by the creation of the Sheriff’s Office Honor Guard and Pipe and Drum Corps.  

Each year during the month of May a week is declared to be National Law Enforcement week to honor all law enforcement, both living and those that have made the ultimate sacrifice by giving their lives in the line of duty.  

Calhoun County had not had local participation in National Law Enforcement Week and the group began planning to hold a Calhoun County Memorial to celebrate the lives of all local law enforcement officers during that time.  Also, that spring Oxford Police Officer Dexter Holcomb lost his life in the line of duty in a traffic accident.  

The 1st Annual Calhoun County Law Enforcement Memorial event was held at Cenntennial Park in Anniston.  District Attorney Joe Hubbard was the Keynote speaker and Sheriff Larry Amerson the Master of Ceremonies; officer Holcomb and other fallen officers were honored in that solemn service.

Participation in the memorial has grown and other agencies now have their own Honor Guards as well.  Anniston’s Centinennal Park is now the official site of Alabama’s Law Enforcement and Fire Memorial Park.  The park is already the home of Alabama’s Vietnam Memorial Wall.  

Honor Guards from the Sheriff’s Office, Anniston Police and Oxford Police will participate in the Ceremonies.

We all recognize how important it is to honor the dedication and the many sacrifices made by all branches of law enforcement, especially those that died while serving.
